A Prediction Market Trader Made $Nearly Half a Million from Wagers Predicting the Ouster of Maduro.

A bettor profited close to $500,000 on the ouster of the Venezuelan leader shortly prior to it was made public, leading to inquiries about the possibility of profiting from non-public details of American actions.

Sudden Shift in Wagers

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, an online prediction market, that Nicolás Maduro would be out of power by the close of the month rose in the time leading up to Donald Trump announced on Saturday that the president had been taken into custody.

A single trader, which registered on the site recently and took four positions, all on the Venezuelan situation, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a modest bet of $32.5K.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Public Statement

Market statistics shows that traders put the odds of a political change at just a low 6.5 percent in the midday period of the prior Friday.

However the market's assessment had jumped to 11% by shortly before midnight and skyrocketed in the first hours of Saturday, indicating a sudden change in positions right before the official statement was made.

"That trade has all the signs of a transaction based on inside information," stated Dennis Kelleher.

A small number of other individuals also made large payouts from predicting the capture.

Political Attention Grows

Some lawmakers are beginning to pay attention.

Proposed legislation introduced on the start of the week seeks to ban government employees from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a wager.

Market Background

Prediction markets have grown significantly in the past few years, with participants able to wager on everything from elections to political events.

Prediction markets faced scrutiny under the last presidential term. However it has experienced less resistance during the current presidency.

Insider trading is illegal in the securities markets, but there are fewer regulations in the forecasting industry.

A company executive for another major platform said their site "strictly forbids trading on insider information of any form."
