Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that patients who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People buying such medications should be aware of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.

Comparing Treatments

The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through dieting typically have a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Experts believe the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Accounts

People who have come off the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and you become starving," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is compounded if users have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts stress that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing behavioural support.
